Job description
Complexity of living matter currently poses the most adverse barrier in modern in-vivo microscopy. Fuelled by numerous branches of life sciences, the race is now to increase the penetration depth of advanced imaging modalities inside living organisms. This project sets out to develop new, hair-thin endoscopic devices, sending back high-quality images from unprecedented depths of the most delicate tissues of living organisms. The team will push the fundamental and technological limits of the enabling principle – holographic control of light propagation through multimode fibres.
The opening is related to a new EIC-transition project NEUROGate, combining the expertise of three European academic research teams and a start-up company DeepEn GmbH.
This effort will enable the team to deploy several advanced light-based imaging methods inside freely moving animal models. The team is hosted in modern premises of the Leibniz-IPHT in Jena (Germany), featuring spacious optics laboratories, in-house fibre-manufacturing facilities, as well as a support by mechanical workshop. The candidate will be expected to spend a significant fraction of his/her time onsite of our partner institutes, within the EU.
Your qualification:
- PhD degree in Physics, Engineering or a relevant discipline with focus on experimental optics and biomedical imaging
Desired knowledge and skills:
- Proven track-record in relevant field (holographic endoscopy, wavefront shaping/adaptive optics, bio-imaging…)
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Good English in speech and writing
- Interest in working on a cross-disciplinary project with bio-medical researchers
- Overview of programming for instrument control (Labview, Python, Matlab, C++)
- Well-developed analytical thinking
- Experience with handling animal models
- Holding valid ethical approvals of working with animal models is not essential, yet highly desirable.

Salary:
Salary is in accordance with the regulations of the TV-L and your qualifications and experience.
