Aufgaben

The University Hospital Bonn (UKB) is a maximum care hospital with more than 1,300 beds. Our more than 9,000 employees take on tasks in research, teaching and patient care as well as in public health at the highest level. In the science ranking (LOMV) and in the economic result, the UKB is number 1 of the university hospitals in NRW and in 2021 had the third highest case mix index of the university hospitals in Germany.

The “Psychiatric Genomics” Lab (Prof Dr Dr Eva C. Schulte) at the Department of Psychiatry in conjunction with the Institute of Human Genetics at the University Hospital Bonn invites applications as a

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Psychiatric Genomics (m/f/d)

(computational & wet lab)

The full-time position (38,5 h/week, TV-L EG13) is available due the project for a duration of 2.5 years with the possibility of extension.

Lipids are integral to the structure and function of the central nervous system. And lipidomics is an emerging area of interest in mental health disorders. Yet, there are missing essential pieces in our understanding of the lipid metabolism. To address these gaps, this project will investigate how lipid metabolism is regulated in different tissues in humans. We will create and analyze a large lipidomics dataset covering the entire brain-to-blood axis encompassing brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, neuron-derived extracellular vesicles, and plasma and further use genetic data to understand how genes shape the lipidomic landscape in these tissues. Overall, this project offers a unique opportunity to shed light on the role of lipids and the relationship between genes and lipids in health and disease, with a focus on the nervous system.

The successful candidate will primarily work computationally to understand the dynamic regulation of lipid profiles across tissues and across the lifespan and will use additional genetic data to understand the interplay between genetics and downstream “-omics” read-outs (e.g. QTLs). Additional work on the wet-lab side will include management of sample collection and preparation (e.g. enrichment of extracelluar vesicles). Almost all our projects are conducted as extensive international collaborations.

The group is part of both the Department of Psychiatry and the Institute of Human Genetics and offers an excellent working environment at “Life & Brain” as well as a wealth of opportunities for young scientists. The successful candidate will be embedded in a highly interdisciplinary research group spanning molecular, computational, and clinical expertises.

Your Profile

·         You have a PhD, some wet lab experience and a strong computational background (ideally in genetics) with significant experience in the analysis of large genetics or other “-omics” datasets during your training

·         You have extensive experience in the computational analysis of “-omics” datasets and/or in statistical genetics using Python and R

·         You have experience with HPC environments (LSF, Slurm, etc.), workflow managers (nextflow, snakemake, etc.), containers (dockers and singularity) and Jupyter notebooks.

·         You are highly motivated and team-oriented with a high degree of independence, a willingness to seek creative solutions to challenges and to acquire new skills as well as a strong work ethic

·         You have strong communication skills in English and experience visualizing, presenting, and publishing research findings

What We offer

·         An ambitious, cutting-edge, multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art project of high translational relevance to be published in a competitive scientific journal

·         Excellent networking opportunities in a thriving international and collaborative research environment and through the attendance of national and international conferences

·         Continuous guidance and intensive training in a multidisciplinary, highly collaborative research team as well as a professional career development program

·         The candidate will be encouraged to obtain additional external funding to develop an independent research profile during postdoctoral training

·         Supplementary benefits like public sector pension schemes (VBL)

·         A family-friendly environment with the possibility to use the day care center

·         A postdoctoral position in line with German salary grades (TV-L E13) available for 2.5 years with the possibility of extension
